Why Are Golf Pitch Shots So Difficult
To Master?
|
|
Unless
you are very skillful and experienced enough to try and attempt to play
the Phil
Mickelson lob shot, which i would only recommend attempting
under very special conditions, then you will find out that the golf
pitch shot is one of the hardest short game skills in golf to learn and
master!
The golf
pitch shot is usually required from anywhere
within 100 yards of the putting green or when you find yourself in a
position that is too close to hit a full sand
wedge or pitching wedge
shot into the pin. So being able to accurately judge distances becomes
a key factor.
This is one of the main reasons why pitching shots
are so difficult to play. Unlike the full
golf swing where you use the
same length golf swing for every shot or the chip shot which uses a
much easier to control one lever stroke, the pitch shot needs more feel
and touch. |
To
be able to consistently and accurately judge how far your pitch shots
are going to travel and with how much elevation, means that you need to
have an exceptional awareness of how long your back swing needs to be,
as well as understanding how much you need to open the club face and
where to position the golf
ball in your stance.
Although your ball
position and golf
club face angle can be addressed at setup and before you
even play the golf shot, having that extra pressure of trying to
accurately feel and measure the length of you back swing and follow
through for each individual golf pitch shot that you have to face, can
create additional stress and tension in your muscles.
It's this
additional stress and tension that can lead to all sorts of errors and
mistakes, and makes these kind of shots so difficult to master!
Although focusing on maintaing a good rhythm and learning a solid golf
pitching technique will certainly help, the best way to improve
your
golf chipping abilities is through practice and gaining
experience.
If you are serious about improving your
golf chips shots and looking for some inspirational advice on how to
take your short game and golf chipping to the next level, then i would
recommend that you get a copy of Phil
Mickelson's excellent golf
instructional book called 'Secrets
Of The Short Game'
