Callaway idTECH Golf Range
Finder Review
|
|
The
Callaway
idTECH golf laser range finder has been designed in
conjunction with optical specialists Nikon to provide fast,
simple and accurate range finding, and offer yardage adjustments to
compensate for the inclines/declines of the course.
Measuring 5.1 x 1.8 x 2.7 and weighing 7.4 ounces the idTECH
range finder is a standard size slope edition rangefinder and apart
from the Bushnell Hybrid unit, which combines the functions of a range
finder and golf GPS unit, the Callaway idTECH is unique in the fact
that it also provides an external LCD display.
With a maximum range of 550 yards the Callaway idTECH golf laser
rangefinder does fall short of some of the competition like the Busnell
Pro 1M Slope that offers a range of 1 mile (1670 yards). Having said
that the idtech is accurate to within 1/2 yard and a 550 yard range is
more than ample for most golfers needs.
Similar to all of the recent Callaway Range Finders, the idTECH
features First Target Priority Mode. This feature works on the same
principle as PinSeeker on the Bushnell models and PinHunter on the
Leupold models and makes it a lot easier to lock onto pin positions. |
The key feature that separates the Callaway idTECH range finder and
other Slope Edition Range Finders from the Tournament Legal Models is
slope technology. This technology provides additional information in
the form of adjusted distance measurements that take into account the
angle of slope.
Although slope technology can help you to make significantly better
club selection decisions on the golf course, it is unfortunately deemed
to be non-legal for competition or tournament use, so slope edition
range finders can only be used in friendly competition or for
practicing purposes. Some of the newer models like the Leupold GX-4i
provide more advanced features to help you develop your game, including
a club selection function, that takes custom distance measuring to a
new level and makes suggestions on which club you should use for your
next shot.
The Callaway idTECH range finder also provides a useful scan mode that
allows you to hold the power button down for about 25 seconds and pan
across the landscape to receive constantly updated distance readings of
the targets that appear in the crosshairs. It also benefits from
Nikon's multi-coated optics for improved visibility and has a durable
waterproof and fog proof construction, that will last the tests of time
and can be used in all weather conditions.
In many ways the Callaway idTECH range finder has been superseded by
the new Callaway IQ model, however it is still one of the cheapest
models in its class with a recommended retail price of $399.95. This
makes it an affordable option for those golfers who are looking to
benefit from the additional features that a slope edition range finder
can offer.

LR550 Golf Laser Rangefinder Review |
Callaway
have entered the golf laser range finder market by teaming up with
Nikon to produce the incredibly accurate and reasonably priced LR550.
Nikon are obviously very well known for their high quality optics and
are long standing leaders in the optical industry, so this seems like a
very sensible choice by Callaway.
Although the Callaway
LR550 golf tournament edition range finder has been around
for a few years now, it is still an extremely popular choice amongst
avid golfers, newbies and players who have just started the game. This
is mainly because of its simple design, ease of use and ability to
produce accurate results.
